History

Since Republic of China government was founded, the ROC government has always appreciated the importance of overseas Chinese. Due to the vigorous economy of Taiwan, the citizens’ increasing income, and the continuous accumulation of economy and assets after 80s, the government began to have energy to spare on reinforcing the contact with overseas Chinese. The Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission (OCAC) spent years on doing research and preparation. On March 29th, 1986,“Chinese Culture Center of Taipei Economic and Culture Office in New York” (C.C.C.) was first established in the central area of Flushing, New York.

At that time, C.C.C. consisted of an auditorium, a meeting room and a reading room. The reading room contained Chinese books, domestic and overseas newspapers for overseas Chinese; the auditorium had a capacity of one hundred so as to hold various activities. During September in 1986, C.C.C. made its book loan policy for overseas Chinese to lend books. C.C.C. continuously holds many kinds of classes and studios and annually cooperate with other centers to hold “Overseas Chinese Cultural Seasons" and "Overseas Chinese Physical Fitness Seasons” in order to advocate proper leisure activities and enhance life; however, the overseas Chinese education became one of important task that C.C.C. put efforts on. C.C.C. not only offers those Chinese schools located in New York free educational materials but also invite Taiwanese experts to host the “Research and Study meeting” during every July or August.

Because the establishment of C.C.C.N.Y was greatly affirmed by local overseas Chinese, its place was used frequently. At the beginning of its establishment, it lacked space and subsequently began to expand itself up until 1989. Now the area of center covers approximately 7,000 square feet, and the auditorium has been broadened to allow a capacity of two hundred. In addition, to comply with the plan of“ Chinese Language and Culture Online Education”, C.C.C. added one computer room which has capacity of 15 persons and two regular classrooms which can contain 20-30 persons. while the reading room remained unchanged. Though the books here have been renewed at unsystematic times, the amount of total volumes has increased from 2000 to more than 8000, and the amount of people who borrowing books has increased close to 5000 in the past 10 years. Up until now, there are Chi-Fan art of flower arrangement, Children painting, Traditional Chinese Painting, and computer classes held in C.C.C. Every Saturday from 10 am in the morning, the “Long Island Chinese Bridge Club” hosts a friendly match of the Bridge; every Sunday afternoon from one o’clock, the New York Overseas Chinese Children Chorus and Hsiang-Yin Hai-Tian Chorus also practice singing in classrooms. All the classes make C.C.C. increase its services, and its anticipation is to let all the overseas Chinese can feel at home there.

The purpose of establishing Chinese Culture Center of Taipei Economic and Culture Office is to offer a place for culture exchanges, through contacting overseas Chinese schools to help overseas Chinese education develop. At the same time, it also complies with the needs of overseas Chinese to offer various kinds of services in hope that these mutual communications can reinforce the identification of Chinese origin and culture from overseas Chinese community.

Background

New York, which is the biggest city in United States and the center of world trade, politics and culture, can be viewed as the capital of the world. The combination of different races in New York represents its characteristics. It contains every color of races, for example, Chinese, Utah, Italian, Korean, Indian, Puerto Rico, and Black. Thus, it is viewed as the furnace of every nation. New York city is divided into five areas, which are Queens, Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. Some famous places in Manhattan are: the Empire Building, Central Park, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Chinatown, and the So-ho area where artists gather. The statue of Liberty is also located in the southern ocean of Manhattan Island. However, most of the new immigrates live in Queens and mostly gather in Flushing. C.C.C. of New York was established on March 29th, 1986 in Flushing and its range of service includes the state of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
