On 17 May, the Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium (TRO) held an opening reception at the Palais des Beaux Arts (BOZAR) for the calligraphy exhibition ”Silent Movement” by Tong Yang-tze. VIPs including the artist herself, Paul Dujardin, Artistic Director at the Palais des Beaux Arts (BOZAR), and officials from the EU, Belgian MPs were in attendance.
Director Dujardin said that he had been amazed by Madame Tong’s calligraphy works when he visited Taiwan two years ago. He emphasized that BOZAR was honored to have the exhibit there, together with the 2016 Queen Elisabeth Music Competition. Through her work, the public will be invited to engage in a visual form of contemplation, before and after the concerts.
Representative Kuoyu Tung stressed that after trying for several years to organize an exhibit of Madame Tong’s calligraphy for a Belgian audience, our office is pleased to finally be able to welcome her to open the exhibition in Brussels. Without Mr. Dujardin’s full support and timely invitation to Madame Tong, this exhibition, in which Chinese calligraphy is expressed in such an untraditional way, could not have taken place.
Madame Tong said that several indispensable factors have converged to make this exhibition possible, and she expressed her appreciation to the TRO and BOZAR. She described her creative process, saying enjoys every moment of writing calligraphy, and she hopes to share the long-lasting power of life and the beauty that she senses in calligraphy with the audience, as a way to show the intricacies of Chinese culture and to enhance Taiwan-Belgian friendship.
The exhibition will be on display at BOZAR from 18 May to 1 June, from 10am to 6pm.
