Ambassador Wu Rong-chuan, Representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada, together with Dr. Jenn-Chuan Chern, CEO of the Tang Prize Foundation, met and congratulated the Honourable Louise Arbour, winner of the 2016 Tang Prize in Rule of Law in Montreal on July 14, 2016.
Madame Arbour has kindly accepted the invitation to attend the 2016 Tang Prize awards ceremony in Taipei on Sept. 25 and relevant events. She looks forward to meeting and exchanging opinions with Taiwanese leaders in all walks of life.
“The ROC (Taiwan) and Canada share the common values of democracy, human rights, freedom, and the rule of law,” Wu said. “Bilateral trade relations are highly complementary and mutually beneficial as both are market economies.”
“Exchanges between the two countries have been close,” Wu continued. “We should strengthen cooperation in the areas of high-quality agricultural products and energy.”
Madame Arbour praised the establishment of the Tang Prize and commented that it is a model for enterprises to practice social responsibility. She also thanked the international juries of the Tang Prize for recognizing her efforts in pursuing the rule of law and justice, as well as her contributions in the fields of international criminal justice and human rights.
Madame Arbour graduated from the College of Law at the University of Montreal. She is counsel and jurist in residence at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG), a Canadian law firm in Montreal. Before joining BLG, she served as the Associate Dean of Osgoode Hall Law School of York University, was a Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, and served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
