Representative Wu revisits University of Waterloo as a guest lecturer

Ambassador Rong-chuan Wu, Representative of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada, gave a guest lecture entitled “Taiwan’s Dynamic Civil Society” at the Graduate Institute of East Asian Studies in Renison University College, University of Waterloo, on March 1st, 2016, at the invitation of the Graduate’s Director Dr. Kimie Hara. The lecture was given to the Institute’s seminar course “International Relations in East Asia,” and lasted for one and a half hours.

Ambassador Wu began his speech by explaining how factors like history, political reform and diplomatic situation have contributed to the vigorous development of Taiwan’s non-governmental organizations (NGOs); he then elaborated the way that Taiwan’s NGOs have been participating in international activities and contributing to international community. Ambassador Wu also mentioned the efforts made by Taiwan’s NGOs in political, economic and environmental issues, helping the society reach consensus and providing inputs for government policies. He highly recognized the efforts made by and value of Taiwan’s NGOs.

In his presentation, Ambassador Wu mentioned the Tibetan Buddhist group “Bliss and Wisdom Foundation,” which has set up the Great Enlightenment Buddhist Institute Society (GEBIS) in Prince Edward Island. There are 3-4 hundred young student monks from Taiwan in the monastery to receive Buddhist education now. In addition to advancing Buddhist teachings, the GEBIS also promotes organic farming and environmental protection. On top of that, the GEBIS has adopted local Buffaloland Provincial Park to give back to the community. From Ambassador Wu’s perspective, it is the most successful example of development among Taiwan’s NGOs in Canada.

After the lecture, Ambassador Wu kindly answered questions raised by students regarding, for example, Taiwan’s military service system, the 1992 Consensus, the Diaoyutai Islands issue, the origin of the Olympic “Chinese Taipei” model and the causes as well as effects of the result of Taiwan’s January presidential election. During his presentation, Ambassador Wu interacted with the audience with humour and kindness, leading Canadian students to further their understandings about Taiwan.

Ambassador Wu’s visit to the University was accompanied by Director General of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Toronto Catherine Y. M. Hsu and Deputy Director Alicia Y.H. Wang. Other attendants included Judi Jewinski, Administrative Dean of Renison University College, Professor Hsiao d'Ailly, Chair of Social Development, Renison University College Studie, Overseas Chinese Commissioner of the Republic of China Andrew Wu, leaders of local Taiwanese community and more than 70 students. The seminar room was fully packed.
