A 28-member delegation of TamKang Senior High School (TSHS), Taiwan, led by the School’s Chair of the Board Cheng Kuo-chan, visited Woodstock Collegiate Institute (WCI) in Oxford County, Ontario from April 25 to May 6. The delegation, accompanied by WCI Principal Chris Friesen and students, paid a visit to Provincial Parliament of Ontario on April 28 and was greeted by MPP Ernie Hardeman, who represents the riding of Oxford. In his welcoming remarks, MPP Hardeman reiterated the friendship between Canada and Taiwan.
Director General of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Toronto Catherine Y. M. Hsu also welcomed the delegation at the Parliament. DG Hsu highly praised the efforts by Oxford County in continuously sustaining exchanges with Taiwan. She also encouraged TSHS students to serve as youth ambassadors to conduct a positive people-to-people diplomacy during the visit.
Members of the delegation attended classes at the Institute together with WCI students and undertook performance and cultural exchanges. During their exchange stay in Oxford County, the members were all boarding with local families. They were deeply impressed by hospitality of the hosting families and the beauty of local scenery.
TSHS students gave performances during the Welcome Assembly at WCI on April 27. The story was reported in the local newspaper Woodstock Sentinel Review.
In March of last year, former Oxford County Mayor Don McKay, together with Principal Friesen, led a 17-member WCI delegation to TSHS in Taiwan for an exchange visit. During the visit, a twinning school agreement was signed, laying the foundation for the two schools’ future exchanges.
