TECO Toronto hosts “Celebration Reception for the Inauguration of the 14th President and Vice-President of the Republic of China (Taiwan)”

Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Toronto (TECO Toronto) on May 20 held “Celebration Reception for the Inauguration of the 14th President and Vice-President of the Republic of China (Taiwan)” at its affiliated cultural centre. Representatives of Canadian federal, provincial and municipal governments, envoys of the ROC’s diplomatic allies, members of local Taiwanese communities, academia and media were among the guests, around 200 people in total.

In her welcome address, Director General of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Toronto Catherine Y. M. Hsu thanked all the guests for coming to the reception to witness and celebrate the important occasion. She then emphasized that Taiwan has just undergone smoothly the third peaceful transfer of political power, which demonstrates its maturing democracy. DG Hsu also elaborated the essence of President Tsai’s inaugural speech and the five tasks which the new administration aims to take on in order to help further the guests’ understanding of the new government’s vision. More importantly, DG Hsu reminded the audience, Taiwan and Canada share the same core values of peace, democracy, freedom and human rights. The two nations also carry similar ideals and concepts of governance. She sincerely hoped both sides would further enhance bilateral exchanges.

During the reception, ROC Overseas Community Affairs Council Commissioner Marie Cheng, on behalf of local Taiwanese communities, gave the congratulation address and expressed the communities’ whole-hearted support for the new government. In their congratulation remarks, representatives of Canadian federal, provincial and municipal governments, along with envoys of the ROC diplomatic allies, gave high regards to Taiwan’s mature democracy, and recognized President Tsai’s determination in maintaining cross-Strait peace and stability. They also expressed high expectation for Taiwan’s first female president in her facing up to Taiwan’s current economic and social challenges and striving to solve the problems. Several guests stressed that the ideas proclaimed by President Tsai match well with the concepts held by the Canadian government. They were impressed, in particular, by some statements the President made in her speech, such as: “It is not the leader who makes a country great; it is the collective striving of the people that makes this country great.” The guests wished President Tsai every success in governing the nation and fulfilling her ideals. They also gave their blessings to Taiwan’s continuous prosperity and the ever-increasing relationship between Taiwan and Canada.

During the reception, President Tsai’s presentation of the inaugural speech was repeatedly played in a big projector screen. In addition, well-printed profiles of President Tsai and Vice-President Chien-Jen Chen, along with offprints of Taiwan Review’s feature story about President Tsai, were also displayed and distributed. With serving of Taiwanese-styled refreshments and surrounded by beautiful tall flower baskets presented by local Taiwanese groups, the reception was warm and cheerful, ending on a high note.
