A book donation ceremony was held on August 24, 2011 at this Delegation to commemorate the devotion and contribution by Fr. Giger Alfred to the aboriginal people in Taiwan. About 50 people invited attended the ceremony.
Father Giger Alfred is a Swiss Missionary Father of Bethlehem Mission Immensee (BMI). During his 16 years’ service (from 1954 to 1970 - the year he passed away in an accident) in Eastern Taiwan, he did not only preach Gospel to the aboriginal people in his pastoral area but also help them to improve their medical, living and educational conditions. His service has almost become a legend unforgettable by our people in Taiwan. Five books about Fr. Giger Alfred have so far been published either in Chinese or German. The Swiss National Library, University of Zürich, Institute of East Asian Studies (University of Zürich), Geneva Conference Center of Buddhism, Baobab Books Foundation, Chinesische Schule in Bern, Verband Taiwanesischer Chinesischlehrer Schweiz sent representatives to the ceremony to accept the books donated by Mr. Justin Huang, Mayor of Taitung.
Amb. Fadah Hsieh said at the ceremony that these books donated will also allow Fr. Giger Alfred’s compatriots in Switzerland to understand the scared job done by him and all other Swiss clergymen in Taiwan.
