In the Freedom of the Press 2008 survey results published by US-based Freedom House, Taiwan’s press is assessed as “free.” It enjoys the 12th-highest score of 20 (on a scale of zero to 100 where zero is perfect), the highest in Asia for the second year in a row and higher than 83 percent of the 195 countries studied.

Meanwhile, according to the Worldwide Press Freedom Index 2007, which details the results of a survey conducted by Paris-based Reporters Without Borders, Taiwan ranked No. 32, with a score better than 81 percent of the 169 countries in the survey, including Japan and the United States.

In the world of publishing, Taiwan is known for its annual Taipei International Book Exhibition, the largest book fair in Asia, which attracts hundreds of publishers from around the world.
