The Taiwan Ireland Students Society held a welcome dinner on 8 October 2016 in Dublin. Around 30 graduate and postgraduate students gathered to mark the arrival of newcomers from Taiwan and to welcome them to Ireland. His Excellency Representative Simon S.K. Tu and Mrs. Tu were the guests of honour, and they were joined by Chairman of the Taiwan Ireland Association, Mr. Frank Lu.
Representative Tu welcomed his young compatriots to Ireland, remarking on the beauty of the country and making comparisons with Taiwan. He discussed Ireland’s background as the ‘Celtic Tiger’, its recent economic recovery, its attractiveness to major global firms, and its renowned universities, congratulating the students on their choice of location. He also explained the work of the Taipei Representative Office in promoting technological, tourist, cultural, and academic cooperation between Taiwan and Ireland.
Representative Tu wished the students well in their studies and future careers, inviting them all to consider their own role in building stronger relations between Taiwan and Ireland. He concluded by presenting a gift of Taiwanese tea to the Chairman of the Taiwan Ireland Student Society to thank him for his contribution to the Taiwanese community in Ireland.
