His Excellency Representative Simon S.K. Tu visited Dublin City University (DCU) on the 17th May to discuss academic exchange and cooperation. Representative Tu was warmly welcomed by the Deputy President of DCU; Prof. Daire Keogh, the CEO of DCU Language Services; Mr. Cathal Maye and the Head of Business Development of DCU Language Services; Ms. Niamh O 'Mahony. Representative Tu also visited the prestigious “Invent” Innovation & Enterprise Centre on DCU’s campus. Views were exchanged on academic, technological cooperation and many other topics in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
Representative Tu expressed his hope to pursue closer cooperation with DCU and to build upon the existing exchange program. He mentioned Taiwan’s third level institutions actively seek to build academic links with foreign universities, think-tanks and research centres. Ireland’s long cultural history, reputation as a centre of learning and free, open, democratic society offers a parallel to Taiwan and provides an excellent opportunity for academic exchange. Furthermore, Ireland’s bio-technology, finance, and software industries are also well-known globally and offer excellent business opportunities for Taiwanese enterprises.
DCU is composed of five different faculties: business, humanities, science, engineering and education and has approximately 15,000 students, including over 2,000 international students. Alongside DCU’s main university; the “Invent” Innovation & Enterprise Centre focuses specifically on science and technology and R&D. The University is also an active participant in the EU’s "Horizon 2020” program and has been granted subsidies from the EU to promote its R&D. Representative Tu’s visit proved to be a great success with a strong spirit of cooperation expressed from both sides.
