On the 6th November 2017, Representative Simon S.K. Tu visited Co. Wexford in Ireland’s southeast. During the visit, Representative Tu met with local dignitaries from all walks of life including Mayors, leaders of the Chambers of Commerce, businesspeople and representatives from politics, culture, education, science & technology and tourism. The visit proved to be a great success and an excellent occasion to promote bilateral relations between Ireland and Taiwan.
Speaking to Wexford County Council, Representative Tu indicated the opportunities for Irish businesses to invest in Taiwan. In particular, he spoke of Taiwan’s development, cross-strait relations, and of bilateral relations between Ireland and Taiwan. He also remarked that the bilateral trade volume between Ireland and Taiwan is now €750 million (an increase of 29%) while Ireland is now Taiwan’s 12th largest trading partner in Europe (up from 17th in 2016). Speaking of Taiwan’s electronic, ICT, pharmaceutical and green energy sectors, Representative Tu mentioned of the unique opportunity for cooperation between Ireland and Taiwan. With a free and open market and society, Taiwan provides an ideal location for investment and Representative Tu encouraged those present to help strengthen trade relations between Ireland and Taiwan.
Representative Tu also visited Medentech, a famous biotechnology company based in Wexford, where he was shown the company’s water purification products and partnership with distributors in Taiwan. To finish the visit, Representative Tu was welcomed to Enniscorthy Castle to meet local dignitaries and representatives and was greeted by historical re-enactors and a traditional Irish musical performance. At the Castle, Representative Tu spoke of Taiwan’s unique history, culture, art, music and food and invited those present to pursue meaningful cooperation and exchange with Taiwan.
