Scholarship recipients prepped for travel to Taiwan

20160720IMG_3453Basseterre, St. Kitts, 22nd July 2016 – Twelve new students – for the first time – are about to leave the federation and embark on their educational journey in the Republic of China (Taiwan).

On Wednesday, the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Basseterre had its first gathering with the new scholarship recipients to provide them with much needed information for their trip.

Also involved in the orientation session was the Association of St. Kitts-Nevis Nationals in Taiwan. Members of the Association gave the scholarship recipients insight into life experiences on Taiwan - the people’s way of life and the cultural differences that the students may come across.

Daniel Kuo, the First Secretary at the Embassy, provided information on travel arrangements to Taiwan, reminding them to have all travel documents in order, including valid passports and visas. He informed them of how to apply for the Taiwanese visa and the necessary steps that they would have to take to obtain an Alien Resident Card (ARC) when they get to Taiwan.

Getting around is important for any student and Association member Alrick Edwards spoke about means of transportation and the honesty of the people of Taiwan. He stated that going from one place to the next is very easy and convenient and people often use public transportation.

When referencing the honesty of the people, Edwards said, “You can leave your purse or phone in an area and come back a day or even days after and it will be right where you left it.”

Association Public Relations Officer Donya Francis told the recipients that fellow Kittitians will help them go through required processes once they reach Taiwan and encouraged them to keep an open mind, as the culture in Taiwan is very different from what they are accustomed to here in the federation. Francis told the students to create bonds with Kittitians and Asians alike.

Kuo reminded the students that they are ambassadors, not only St. Kitts & Nevis, but for Taiwan as well, and they must act accordingly.

This year twelve nationals were awarded scholarships for study in Taiwan. The recipients are; Shevanee Nisbett, Rhondel Philip, Dhaima Golding, Hadassah Willett, Kemarri Armstrong, Virecia Williams, Chantel Pemberton, Erika Fraites, Kenrick Pollock, Jamalje Muzine, Adonique Stapleton and Devaughn Amory.

The recipients depart the federation in approximately one month.
