Basseterre, St. Kitts, 11th August 2016 (MyVueNews.com) The twelve fortunate Kittitians and Nevisians, who will be going off to study in Taiwan, were officially awarded their scholarship documents at a ceremony held at the Ocean Terrace Inn (OTI), last evening, 10th August.
This year, eight students were awarded scholarships from Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), while four students received scholarships from the International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF).
All of the MOFA scholarship recipients will be spending five years in the Asian nation, as they would first study Mandarin Chinese for one year then move on to a four-year bachelor’s degree program of their choice. Three ICDF students will be spending two years studying for their master’s degrees and one will be studying medicine for four years.
With smiles on their faces, each of the recipients made their way to the front to finally receive their ‘ticket’ to Taiwan.
In support of the recipients, the 2016 award ceremony, organized by the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan), had in attendance embassy officials, government ministers and officials, Taiwan alumni society members, parents and family members, the Association of St Kitts and Nevis Nationals in Taiwan members and students visiting from Taiwan, media practitioners and other well-wishers.
Speaking to the gathering, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Shawn Richards said that for this year over 40 young people applied for the scholarships. He also mentioned that up to recently, a number of individuals have visited him to query why they weren’t chosen.
The scholarships are becoming very popular among Kittitians and Nevisians after years of people opting to go elsewhere to study because many feel that Taiwan is too far.
