St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): Twelve individuals from St. Kitts and Nevis will be traveling to Taiwan to pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees having received full scholarships from the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan).
At a ceremony Wednesday evening (Aug 10), eight were awarded with 2016 Ministry of Foreign Affairs scholarships and four with International Cooperation and Development Fund scholarships.
Those awarded MOFA scholarships will spend their first year learning mandarin and four years pursuing their bachelor’s degree. ICDF scholarship awardees will directly pursue their bachelors or masters degrees in English-language courses.
Receiving MOFA scholarships are Kemarri Armstrong, Virecia Williams; Chantel Pemberton; Erika Fraites; Kenrick Pollock; Jamalje Muzine, Adonique Stapleton; and Devaughn Amory.
Pursuing masters degrees through ICDF scholarships are Shevanee Nisbett, Rhondel Philip; and Dhaima Golding. Hadassah Willett will pursue a bachelor’s degree.
The areas of study include Environment Sustainable Development, International Health, Agribusiness, medicine, international business computer science and information engineering.
Resident Taiwanese Ambassador His Excellency George Chiou congratulated the awardees, underscoring the important role education plays in national development.
“Human resources play a vital role for a country to achieve sustainable development. Education is crucial for exploiting human resources. Cooperating with our international allies, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Cooperation and Development Fund of the Republic of China (Taiwan) offer scholarships to the talented students from our allied countries. Through these scholarships program we would like to provide assistance to our allies developing their own human resources.
“After intense competition, twelve talented Kittitians and Nevisians have received the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Development Fund scholarships. I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to these talented students. As the representative for the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) I would like to encourage more Kittitians and Nevisians to apply for these Taiwan scholarships in the coming years. Don’t miss this valuable opportunity.”
Minister of Education Shawn Richards thanked the Taiwanese government for its continued assistance through the local Embassy, and encouraged the students to immerse themselves in the new culture. He also admonished them however not to become distracted and to keep their eyes on the prize, earning their degrees.
“Remember, you have been awarded these scholarships from a total of forty-one applicants, so be disciplined, focused, and aspire to achieve your dreams. You have been given an opportunity, so when times become tough, tell yourselves that there are many other persons who would have appreciated the opportunity that you have been given.
“Be focused on what you are there for. Make the learning experience one within and outside of the classroom, but in all that you do, whenever it becomes tough, remind yourselves that you are there for one particular purpose, and that is to return home with a university degree.”
Some of the awardees will depart the Federation later this month while the rest will travel in September.
