Basseterre, St. Kitts, 24th July, 2017 (MyVueNews.com) - It is all about helping St. Kitts and Nevis achieve sustainable development said Ambassador Gow-wei Chiou in a scholarship presentation ceremony, during which he invited more students from the federation to take advantage of the opportunity to further their education.
Ambassador presented thirteen scholars to the successful student applicants: Eight scholarships made available by the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), and five scholarships from the International Cooperation Development Fund (ICDF) on Taiwan.
Speaking to parents, guardians and students, Ambassador Gow-wei Chiou said, “I am happy to have the opportunity to meet with these students and proud parents and guardians.”
He placed into context the importance of the scholarship programs, during the 19th July evening presentation ceremony, held at the Ocean Terrace Inn.
Ambassador Chiou said, “Human resources play a vital role for a country to achieve sustainable development. Education is a crucial mechanism for exploiting human resources,”
He stated, “Cooperating with our international allies, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Cooperation Development Fund of Taiwan offer scholarships to our diplomatic allies.”
Continuing, he explained, “Through these scholarship programs, we would like to provide assistance to our allies for developing their own human resources.”
As a critical component for development, the ambassador is looking forward to more students taking advantage of the educational opportunities available in Taiwan.
“As Ambassador for the Government of the Republic of China on Taiwan, I would like to encourage more Kittitian and Nevisian students to apply for these scholarships. Don’t miss this opportunity,” Chiou said.
The scholarships cover areas of study in Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Development of Engineering, Financial Management, Psycology, Physical Therapy, Mechanical Engineering and Medicine.
The MoFA scholarship awardees will spend their first year studying Mandarin before engaging in their degree studies, while the ICDF scholarship recipients will immediately start their degrees programs.
The ambassador told the parents, guardians and students that studying in a far country with different cultural challenges could be quite lonesome, but he indicated that students from the federation have formed an Association of St. Kitts & Nevis Students in Taiwan.
Ambassador Chiou said, “This Association provides much of the needed family bonds among the Kittitians and Nevisian students.”
In addition, he said the Association representatives back in the federation on vacation have been providing orientation sessions for the new students prior to their journey to Taiwan.
Ambassador Chiou thanked Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Shawn Richards and his “excellent staff at the Ministry of Education”, for helping to make the occasion possible.
