Taiwan has successfully completed its 16th presidential election on January 13th, 2024, marking another milestone in the country’s democratic journey. As of 8:30 AM AST, Lai Ching-te, the candidate of the current ruling party, is leading in the race and set to claim victory, with over 5.5 million votes (40.13%), ahead of Hou Yu-ih (33.44%) and Ko Wen-je (26.43%), according to the Central Election Commission (CEC) . CEC will announce the official vote count later today.
This is the 8th universal and direct presidential election since the first in 1996. The electoral process is peaceful and transparent.
