The head of the Taipei Mission in Latvia, ambassador Gary Ko, participate in the 12th Meeting of the Steering Committee of the Mutual Funds for Scientific Cooperation between Latvia, Lithuania and Taiwan in Riga on 24th to 25th October.
This meeting was co-hosted by Dr. Hong Hochen, Vice Chairman of National Science Council of Taiwan, Mr. Rimantas Vaitkus, Vice Minister of Education and Science, Republic of Lithuania, and Dr. Andrejs Silins, Deputy Head of Latvian Science Academy.
This scientific co-operation is based on and implemented according to the Guidelines for the Program on Mutual funds signed in August 2000 by Prof. Cheng-I Weng, Chairman of National Science Council of Taiwan, Mr. Kornelijus Platelis, Minister of Education and Science, Republic of Lithuania, and Mr. Karlis Greiskalns, Minister of Education and Science, Republic of Latvia.
The Program provide primarily scientific co-operation between the three countries. Convinced that scientific co-operation finally should serve as an innovation impetus for the development in economics and society due to the rapid development in economy and technology as well as due to the ever increasing complexity in all areas of life.
Ambassador Ko mentioned that this platform is one of the cornerstones of cooperation between Taiwan, Latvia and Lithuania. Taiwan accomplished a lot of achievements on science, for instance, after the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company got orders from Apple, it take the place of Intel Corp and became the No.1 chip maker in the world. Taiwan continues to bolster scientific and technological development in new fields, including biotechnology, nanotechnology, space science and disaster prevention. The success of Taiwan’s high –tech enterprises is largely attributable to the government’s generous funding for applied scientific development.
Ambassador also accompanied the members of Taiwanese delegation visiting the Institute of Solid State Physics of University of Latvia and Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis.
