Collaboration of Taiwan and Malaysia – Constructing an International Art Network

During 2016 from June 28th till August 28th, for the first time eight members of VT Artsalon will be exhibiting in Malaysia in the Very Image exhibition, exhibition takes place in Shalini Ganendra Fine Art (SGFA for short). Very Image is curated by VT member Sean C.S Hu, with Cheng Shao Hung as joint curator, featuring works by seven VT members: Chen Wen-Chi, Yao Jui-Chung, Tu Wei-Cheng, Chen Chun-Hao, Wu Dar-kuen, Su Hui-Yu and Isa Ho. Very Image exhibition can be considered as the collective effort from the eight members to advance into ASEAN (The Association of Southeast Asian Nations). Introducing Taiwanese contemporary art to the public in Malaysia using works by VT members as the main focus, through exhibition and seminar talks, with expectations for further collaborations with the local art spaces in the future.

Under comparison to Malaysia, the development of contemporary art in Taiwan is relatively more active and mature, however Malaysia is in a better position in terms of internationalization conditions. In terms of exchange and alliance, it is hoped to provide a better visibility of Taiwanese contemporary art in Malaysia where economy has enjoyed sustained growth, to achieve a more advantageous position in the developing contemporary art scene of Malaysia.

Included in this exhibition project are three talks, the first one takes place in Malaysian Institute of Art, where curator of the exhibition Sean C.S. Hu together with participating artist Su Hui-Yu and Isa Ho shared with the students on the topic of “Development in local and international art” and “Balance of business and creativity”. The second talk took place in SGFA, where VT members interacted with 9 local young artist in a forum discussion on the current situation and future of art development in the two countries. The final talk in the National Visual Arts Gallery, members of VT will shared their ideology in art with the Malaysian art scene through discussion on curating, exhibition, practice and residency in foreign countries.

In recent years, VT Artsalon has been a mover and shaker in promoting reciprocal exchange with foreign counterparts and academic institutions. In addition to SLICE: Wei-Lung Ling Solo Exhibition, a collaborative project between VT Artsalon and Apartment der Kunst, which is on view now in Munich, we have forged close bonds with many institutions in China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Mexico, Czech Republic and France.

SGFA situated in Petaling Jaya, it is an important facilitator engaging cross cultural development within and with South East Asia. The collaboration between VT Artsalon with SGFA, creates the force for Taiwan to advance into Southeast Asia, especially enchoed the “New Go South Policy” which aims to establish the arts and cultural partnership. Very Image exhibition has become an important milestone in Taiwan's arts space on the path of international development! The title of this exhibition refers not only to the images shown in the works by these artists par excellence, but also to the personal and cultural imagery evoked by them.
