Directed and starring Ms. Hong Xiu Yu, the opera opened to a full house audience of over 400 persons.
Ms. Hong Xiu Yu, a former television actress in Taiwan who was known for her performances in gezai opera, has been actively promoting this type of opera in Singapore. She had taught at Singapore’s Chinese Opera Institute and founded the Jade Opera Group in 2011, where she started karaoke sessions as well as elementary and intermediate classes in Taiwanese gezai opera. In recent years, the Jade Opera Group has staged many well-received performances across Singapore.
Subsequently, a 30-minute abridgement of “Suing the Emperor” was staged at the Chinese Opera Institute’s 2016 Extravaganza on 20 March 2016. As the finale of the extravaganza, it is obvious that the troupe led by Ms. Hong is held in high regard. Representative and Mrs. Ta-Tung J. Chang attended the extravaganza where Mr. Baey Yam Keng, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth was the guest of honor.
