At the invitation of the Alumni of Taiwan Universities & Colleges (ATUC), Representative and Mrs. Ta-Tung J. Chang attended its 38th anniversary dinner cum presentation of diligent study awards ceremony on 21 May 2016. Other invited guests included advisers and commissioners from the Overseas Community Affairs Committee, office bearers of the Taipei Business Association, the United Chinese Library and the Alumni Associations of Taiwan Universities in Malaysia, officials from the Taipei Representative Office in Singapore, Mr. Jackson, Tzu-cheng Lee, Director General of the Department of Archives, Information Management and Telecommunications of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of China (Taiwan) and his staff officers. Altogether, members and guests filled 21 tables at the event.
In his address, Representative Chang commended ATUC for serving as a bridge of friendship and goodwill between Singapore and Taiwan. ATUC alumni, who are present across all sectors and a wide variety of industries in Singapore, are steadfast friends to Taiwan. Representative Chang also applauded Dr. Wong Wai Nam, ATUC’s outgoing President, for his many contributions to ATUC during his 4-year term.
Representative Chang highlighted that following the conclusion of the inauguration of its new President and Vice President and the smooth handover of government, the ROC (Taiwan) has demonstrated the maturity and stability of its democratic development. As the first female president to be democratically elected in a Chinese society, President Tsai’s foremost priority is to ensure the welfare of the Taiwanese people by bolstering confidence in the future of Taiwan.
Following Representative Chang’s address, Mr. Heman Chen, Commissioner of the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC), also praised the work of ATUC and the selfless dedication of its Council members over the last 38 years. Mr. Chen hopes that through its scholarship and award program, ATUC can continue to encourage the children of its members to strive for greater academic excellence as well as ensure its continuity by attracting younger members.
In his speech, outgoing ATUC President Dr. Wong Wai Nam thanked all members and guests for their support. He also unveiled ATUC’s eco-friendly 38th anniversary commemorative yearbook in electronic format.
At the ceremony to present “Diligent Study Awards” to elementary, middle and high school students, Representative Chang presented awards to those from high schools.
This was followed by the swearing in of ATUC’s 21st Council for their new terms, with Representative Chang acting as witness. The ensuing traditional dance performance, poetry recitation by the Xin Sheng Poets Society and session of karaoke brought the evening celebrations to a rousing conclusion.
