Deputy Representative James Huang presented the 2016 Taiwan Scholarship to two Singaporean recipients, and the Huayu (Mandarin) Enrichment Scholarship to another two Singaporean recipients at a ceremony held at the Taipei Representative Office in Singapore on 27 July 2016.
In his address, Deputy Representative Huang spoke of the use of traditional Chinese characters in Taiwan, and described Taiwan as a bastion of traditional Chinese culture. The Taiwan and Huayu Enrichment scholarships act as a crucial bridge between Singapore’s young people and world-class institutions in Taiwan. Deputy Representative Huang, therefore, hoped that the scholarship recipients will seize this invaluable opportunity to live and study in Taiwan to learn more about the country and to make lifelong friends.
Since its launch in 2004, the Taiwan Scholarship has benefited over 5000 foreign students while the Huayu (Mandarin) Enrichment Scholarship established in 2005 has seen over 4000 foreign students studying the Chinese language in Taiwan.
This year’s two Taiwan Scholarship recipients will be heading to National Taiwan Normal University and National Tsing Hua University respectively, while the two Huayu (Mandarin) Enrichment Scholarship recipients will be pursuing their language studies at the National Chengchi University and the Soochow University respectively. Present at the awards ceremony were the past scholarship recipients who shared their experiences of living and studying in Taiwan with one another.
