The Taiwanese musical film and romantic comedy, 52 Hz, I Love You, will premiere at University College London’s Cruciform Building on 28 April.
Likened to the US Oscar-winning La La Land, the film is Taiwan’s first domestically produced musical film. Set on Valentine’s Day, it depicts a series of romantic comedy stories alongside popular Taiwanese songs. The film’s title was inspired by the 52Hz whale, said to be the world’s loneliest because of its unusual voice frequency that no other whales can hear. The title also serves as a metaphor for the loneliness that the protagonists in the story face in finding true love in the hustle and bustle of Taipei City.
The film’s director, Wei Te-Sheng, made his international debut when his first full-length motion picture Cape No. 7 became Taiwan’s highest-grossing film of all time in 2008. He is renowned for incorporating elements of narrative history into his work, with Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale and Kano both succeeded in delivering a vivid depiction of what lives were like for people in the most marginalised sections of Taiwanese society.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with Director Wei and Producer Jimmy Huang on the ideas behind the production of the film and the development of the Taiwanese film industry.
