US EXPRESSES SUPPORT FOR TAIWAN’S PARTICIPATION IN WHA

As Taiwan is yet to receive an invitation to the WHA, James Moriarty, Chairman of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), has expressed support for Taiwan's participation in the Assembly.
Mr Moriarty said, ‘We continue to support Taiwan’s meaningful substantial contributions to the international community. In particular, the United States has welcomed Taiwan’s participation as an observer for the past eight WHA meetings. We look forward to Taiwan’s continuous participation at this important event.’ Mr Moriarty’s comments mark the first time a US official has publicly voiced support for Taiwan’s participation in the WHA since President Donald Trump assumed office.
In response to Mr Moriarty’s speech, Vice President Chen Chien-jen expressed his gratitude to the US government for their assistance during the 2003 SARS outbreak, when Taiwan’s request for WHO assistance was turned down. The Vice President said, ‘I assure you that Taiwan will continue to be an indispensable partner to the international community in preventing disease and safeguarding public health.’
