On 4 June, the 28th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests, President Tsai Ing-wen called on Beijing to face the June 4 Incident with an open mind and said mainland China can learn from Taiwan’s experience of democratic reform.
‘28 years ago in Tiananmen Square, a group of students and members of the public challenged the reality of mainland China, and their actions enlightened a whole generation,’ President Tsai wrote in a Facebook post.
Urging the Beijing authorities to face up to the incident, President Tsai added that Taiwan is willing to share its experience in the transition to democracy with mainland China to reduce the pains of democratic reform. ‘For democracy: some are early, others are late, but we will all get there in the end,’ Tsai wrote.
President Tsai said the mainland Chinese authorities have treated the Tiananmen Square protest as a ‘counter-revolutionary riot’ that was suppressed by the military and the police. ‘If the mainland authorities re-examined the incident, they would win the admiration of the world,’ the president wrote.
