From 21-25 June, Taiwan made its fourth appearance at Glastonbury Festival, the world’s largest greenfield music festival. Supported by the Ministry of Culture’s Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development, Taiwan’s 2017 line-up featured, Matzka, a Paiwan reggae singer, ABAO, a Paiwan songstress who won the Best Aboriginal album at Taiwan’s 2017 Golden Melody Awards, and DJ RayRay, a renowned music producer.
They performed in the Silver Hayes area, which featured techno, electronic, underground, grime, hip hop, and global beats. In addition, Matzka and ABAO joined the West Holts Back Stage bar line-up for the first time, a stage which is renowned for inviting prominent professionals, music festival curators, and artists from the global music industry.
Taiwan’s 2017 line-up was selected by Glastonbury curator Malcolm Haynes, who became impressed by Matzka and ABAO’s integration of elements from reggae, rock, and aboriginal music last year when he visited Taiwan. Haynes added that he expects to bring more installation art from Taiwan to Glastonbury in the future.
The night before the artists went to Glastonbury, they performed in a concert at Proud Camden in North London. The event was attended by the TRO’s Deputy Representative Shyang-Yun Cheng along with staff from Cultural Division.
