On 24 June, Taiwanese artist Charwei Tsai hosted a concert named Big Sing at London’s Southbank Centre to demonstrate the value of song in bringing communities together. The event formed part of the Southbank Centre’s Refugee Week.
The songs performed were inspired by Tsai’s video art project at the Hayward Gallery, and created in collaboration with participants from the Women for Refugee Women charity (WfR), and women at Yarl’s Wood Detention Centre.
The concert’s line-up included the London Syrian Ensemble, a collective of Syrian musicians who either studied or taught at the Damascus Conservatoire, Mixed Up Chorus, a London-based intercultural choir, and Big Sing Women for Refugee Women, a choir formed of volunteers from the WfR charity.
The concert accompanied Tsai’s Hear Her Singing exhibition, held at the Southbank Centre from 19 June – 2 July.
