On 27 September, Taiwan’s Alishan Forest Railway and the UK’s Welshpool & Llanfair Railway (WLLR) signed a ‘sister railway cooperation agreement’ in Chiayi City, southern Taiwan.
Under the agreement, the two sides will work together to promote both railways in the international rail tourism market, while sharing experience and technical skills in areas such as management practices and the conservation of historic steam locomotives.
The agreement was signed by Director-General of the Forestry Bureau, Lin Hwa-ching and WLLR Chairman Steve Clews. Also in attendance were UK Trade Envoy to Taiwan Lord Faulkner of Worcester and former Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Lords Lord Shutt, who were visiting Taiwan as part of a fact-finding mission organised by Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
