Emerging Taiwanese conductor Chi-Yuan Lin will collaborate with the Avanti Orchestra in Maryland on May 4! Join us for this musical feast!
The Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States is collaborating on a concert with the Friday Morning Music Club (FMMC), a prominent classical music organization in the Greater Washington area. The concert will feature emerging conductor from Taiwan, Chi-Yuan Lin, and the Avanti Orchestra, affiliated with the FMMC.
Founded in 1886, the Friday Morning Music Club (FMMC) has been promoting classical music in the Washington area for over 130 years. FMMC produces approximately 90 free concerts annually and nurtures two ensembles, the Avanti Orchestra and the Arioso Choral Ensemble. The club invites musicians from around the world to audition to collaborate with these ensembles.
Chi-Yuan Lin is a Taiwanese conductor and pianist. For this event, this promising conductor participated in the club's audition for the music director of Avanti Orchestra, and Lin was chosen for the opportunity to collaborate with the Avanti Orchestra out of over 50 applicants. Lin, recognized as an emerging conductor in Taiwan, is set to assume the role of conductor at the Ryan Opera Center of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, one of the top five opera houses in the United States, starting this May. She will assist in preparing young artists for performances and productions at the opera house.
Lin is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in conducting at the Peabody Institute of Music, Johns Hopkins University. She holds a master's degree in conducting from National Taiwan Normal University's Department of Music, where she also earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance. She has worked with multiple renowned orchestras including Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Richmond Symphony Orchestra, and Hartford Symphony Orchestra. She also served as music director for Expedition Chamber Orchestra in Taiwan. She was a student of the esteemed conductor Lu Shao-Jia, former Music Director of the Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra.
The upcoming concert promises to take the audience on a journey through diverse musical landscapes of different eras. It begins with "Strum" for string orchestra by Grammy-winning American composer Jessie Montgomery. This contemporary piece explores American folk idioms and the spirit of dance, using guitar-like plucking of the strings to create ethereal hums and rhythmic dances. The concert will also feature acclaimed cellist Brannon Cho, a prize winner of the Elizabeth competition, performing classic works: Haydn's Cello Concerto No.1 and the passionate and energetic Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.5.
The concert will be held on May 4th (Saturday) at 7:30 PM at the Montgomery College Cultural Arts Center (7995 Georgia Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20910). Admission is free, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Friends from the Greater Washington area who are interested are welcome to join this musical extravaganza.
