Taiwanese contemporary dance group "Hung Dance" at Duke University on June 14 and June 15
The American Dance Festival, located in North Carolina, has long been dedicated to international cultural exchange programs. In 2021, they collaborated with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO) to co-produce the online performance project "EQUILIBRIUM," choreographed by Lai Hung-Chung. This year, in another collaboration with TECRO, they have invited Hung Dance to perform in the United States for the first time, showcasing the classic dance piece "Birdy" in its 8-person version.
"Birdy" was originally conceived as a duet in 2017 by choreographer Lai Hung-Chung. It has since evolved into a poetic and captivating work that transcends contemporary dance boundaries, blending elements from both Eastern and Western cultures. The performance explores themes of freedom and constraints, symbolized by the traditional opera prop, the feather.
The work has received numerous awards and accolades in Spain, Germany, Switzerland, and Japan, including the "Special Prize for the Conservation of the Cultural Heritage of Humanity" from the NO'HMA Theater in Italy and the first prize from FACP-Pitch for New Aspects Clare C. & Friends Fellowship in 2023.
The event will be the troupe's debut performance in the United States, with shows on Friday, June 14, and Saturday, June 15, at 7:00 PM at Duke University's Reynolds Industries Theater (Bryan University Center, 125 Science Dr, Durham, NC 27708), providing an opportunity to showcase Taiwan's unique contemporary dance style to the world.
