The world-renowned contemporary dance troupe Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan will be performing at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts at 7pm on February 12th and 13th, 2016.
Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, established by Taiwan choreographer Lin Hwai-min in 1973, has successfully blended its roots in Asian mythology, folklore and aesthetics with a modern sensibility. Cloud Gate will be performing artistic director Lin’s 2013 creation Rice, which is inspired by the farming village of Chihshang in the East Rift Valley of Taiwan. The piece is set to the music of Hakka folk songs and incorporates sounds from the fields against a video backdrop that depicts the life cycle of a rice paddy.
The Times, London, has described Cloud Gate as “Asia’s leading contemporary dance theatre,” and the New York Times has recognized that “Lin Hwai-min has succeeded brilliantly in fusing dance techniques and theatrical concepts from the East and the West.”
The performance, to be held in the Opera House, is the third time that Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan has been invited to perform at the Kennedy Center. For more information, please visit: http://www.kennedy-center.org/calendar/event/DQDSD.
