On June 9, Director General Steven Tai signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a reciprocal drivers' license agreement between Tennessee and Taiwan. Commissioner Bill Gibbons of the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security hosted the signing ceremony. After remarks by Gibbons, Representative Tilman Goins, Representative Harry Brooks and DG Tai, Commissioner Gibbons and DG Tai signed the document.
The agreement means that citizens of Taiwan, 18 and older, with legal working/student/resident visas, can convert their own driver's licenses to Tennessee’s while in Tennessee; and Tennessee travelers in Taiwan will enjoy the same privilege. The Memorandum will be validated after July 1. Taiwan is the 2nd foreign government to sign the drivers’ license agreement with Tennessee. Eighteen US states now have such agreements with Taiwan.
In 2015, the trade volume between Taiwan and the US was US$66.6 billion dollars. Taiwan is the 9th largest trading partner with the US, and has created 323,456 job opportunities in the United States. Taiwan is the 5th largest trading partner in Asia with Tennessee, with $1.2 billion trade volume in 2015.
