Global Atlanta publishes DG Tai's Commentary
In today's issue, a column by Director General Huei-Yuan (Steven) Tai touches on recent events in the South China Sea, specifically the July 12 decision by the Hague-based Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in favor of the Philippines in its case against mainland China over the South China Sea.
The article makes specific references to planks of the GOP platform regarding Taiwan, and includes quotes from a July 18 Washington Post interview with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen. In the interview, she stated that Taiwan does not accept the PCA decision because it was not allowed to participate in the proceedings, the ROC was referred to as the “Taiwan Authority of China,” and Taping Island is indeed an island, not a rock as the PCA determined. President Tsai also urged that disputes in the South China Sea be settled peacefully through multilateral negotiations under international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
In the article, DG Tai makes the case that Taiping is a habitable island. He also stresses the importance of regional peace to US interests and the future of global commerce. He reiterates Taiwan's commitment to take resolute action to safeguard the country’s territory and maritime rights, and its willingness, through negotiations conducted on the basis of equality, to work with all states concerned to advance peace and stability in the South China Sea.
