Ambassador Kao is a lifelong sports enthusiast and is skilled at tennis, golf, baseball, and softball. His throw was greeted with applause, and was displayed on the teletron above Fenway. The pitch was a symbol of cultural exchange and diplomacy between Massachusetts and Taiwan.
When Ambassador Kao studied in Taiwan he always played baseball, serving as the team leader in Taiping Elementary School, Datong Junior High School, Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School, and the National Taiwan University.
Madame Kao, TECO-Boston Director-General and Mrs. Scott Lai, Deputy Director-General and Mrs. Bruce Chen, Division Director John Chu, and Massachusetts State Representative Tackey Chan were also invited to attend.
