Director-General Scott Lai Delivers Talk on Taiwan at Clark University

Director-General Scott Lai of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston delivered a talk at the invitation of the Department of Political Science at Clark University in Worcester on March 16. The title of the talk, “Taiwan Today, Looking Toward Tomorrow” focused on Taiwan’s current situation, Taiwan-U.S. relations, and cross-Strait relations.
Dr. Srinivasan Sitaraman, Associate Professor of the Political Science Department, hosted the event with 40 people in attendance. In addition to introducing Taiwan’s history, geography, and economy, Mr. Lai also highlighted the achievements of several of Taiwan’s internationally renowned corporations. Regarding Taiwan-U.S. relations, Mr. Lai pointed out that Taiwan and the U.S. share a close relationship, including trade and investment, high-level visits, Presidential transits, resolutions by various states government supporting Taiwan, reciprocal driver license agreements, and Taiwan-U.S diplomatic immunity.
Mr. Lai spoke on the reduction of cross-Strait tensions and outlined President Tsai Ing-wen’s cross-Strait policy. He noted peaceful coexistence between Taiwan and Mainland China depends on maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, mutual respect, and patience.
