Director-General Scott Lai Pays Respects to Lt. Colonel Warren Smith, a Heroic American “Flying Tigers” Pilot in WWII

Director-General and Mrs. Scott Lai of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston were invited to attend a yearly dinner of the Rhode Island Aviation Hall of Fame (RIAHOF) in Cranston, Rhode Island on November 18, 2017. At the dinner, Mr. Lai paid respects to the heroic Air Force members of the “Flying Tigers,” a former American military unit that augmented the R.O.C’s wartime efforts.
This is the fourth time that Director-General and Mrs. Scott Lai were invited to attend the yearly dinner. He was also the only representative of a foreign government in attendance. More than 200 people attended the event, including retired members of the Rhode Island military, and former Flying Tigers and their descendants.
Director-General Lai praised the sacrifices that Lt. Colonel Warren Smith and the other Flying Tigers made, paying his respectson behalf of the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to them and their descendants. Mr. Lai noted that the R.O.C. and the U.S. share many common values, including democracy, freedom, and human rights, and that the two counties strive for a more peaceful world. He also wished that Taiwan and the U.S. continue to enjoy everlasting friendship.
