The Commercial Division facilitates two-way trade and investment between ROC and the New England states. The main functions are to help local businesses find the right buyers or suppliers in Taiwan, assist in complying with regulatory requirements, and to match local businesses with the right people who have the best information to do business with Taiwan.
Taiwan is Massachusetts' 7th largest export market, amounting to a total of more than $1 Billion and Massachusetts ranks 6th among the States in exporting to Taiwan in 2007. In the other New England states, New Hampshire's exports to Taiwan grew 6.26%,Rhode Island, 45.84% and Maine, 134.62% in 2007; Taiwan is also Vermont's 5th largest export market.
In addition, Taiwan has more than 300 investments here in the New England states, accumulating to an investment amount of more than $700 million. The main industries include information technology, telecommunications, biotechnology, consulting and restaurants, etc. Altogether, it has created over 15,000 job opportunities. There are over 20 companies from the New England area investing in Taiwan, including State Street Bank and Raytheon.
The New England region is known as the Silicon Valley of the East, so there are many cooperative opportunities, particularly in the high-tech industries, for Taiwan and the New England states. Every year, there are many Taiwanese delegations from all business sectors who visit the New England states. Similarly, Taiwan has also hosted trade delegations from the New England states. The Commercial Division assists with investment seminars, trade shows, job fairs, while serving as the liaison for these delegations.
