GENERAL RULES & REGULATIONS FOR 2017 TAIWAN INTERNATIONAL WOOD SCULPTURE COMPETITION
- Purpose:
To enhance international cultural exchange as well as to promote the inheritance and innovation of the art of woodcarving.

- Entry Qualifications: For all domestic and foreign artists.
- The submitted art piece must be original and of individual creation in the past two years.
- The maximum for each artist is two pieces.
- The following offenses will cause disqualification for a 3-year period from participation in the competition. The Organizer reserves the right to pursue legal action in the future.
- Copy or assume the work of another person.
- Entries have been entered in other competitions, or shown in any public/private exhibitions (including any part of the art work)
- Entry and Regulations:
There are 2 entry categories including Craft Wood Carving, Contemporary Wood Carving.
(1) Craft Wood Carving
Submitted works, may be temple decoration, religious statues, legendary characters, auspicious animals, flowers and birds etcetera and can be three dimensional or in relief. The work must be made of wood. The judging will focus on four criteria: wood aesthetics, carving skills, innovation andcultural and spiritual preservation.
(2)Contemporary Wood Carving
Submitted works can be in any style and can be two or three dimensional. In addition to wood other materials may be included, participants should pay attention to the proportionality and relevance of the wood with other materials. Due to space restrictions, installation works will not be accepted. The judging will focus on four criteria: aesthetic style, appropriate technique, creativity and contemporary concept.
(3)The size of each work can not exceed 100 cm for every length, width and height (inclusive of stands), and not exceed 80kg in weight.
Application Procedure: The contest includes two stages.
(1)Preliminary selection:
a) Application Method: The application may be written, on a CD-ROM or via e-mail.
- Written: the basic information is to be presented in writing, photos of the submitted work must be shown on CD-ROM.
- CD-ROM: the basic information and photographs of the submitted work saved on a CD-ROM
- E-mail: send the basic information and photographs of the submitted work in the same file. If you have not received a reply from the organizer within one week, please send again, or contact the organizer immediately.
- Postal applications should be addressed to “2017 Taiwan International Wood Sculpture Competition ” via registered mail to Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum No.88 Guang Sheng Xin Cheng, Guang Sheng Village, Sanyi, Miaoli 36744, TAIWAN R.O.C.
- Incomplete or inappropriate application forms will not be accepted.
b) Application Form :
- Fill out all fields in the form with the requested information in detail and provide photos of your submitted works. Applications without complete information or the required documents will not be accepted.
- Applicants with 2-dimensional work should send one clear photo, those with 3-dimensional work should send photos taken from four different angles (front, back, right and left), plus a standard photo of the art piece from the view of your choice.
- Every photo file of the work must be under 1MB in size and in Jpeg format.
c) All documents, photos, and print-outs will not be returned. Please keep one copy before mailing.
d) Please download the Entry Form (including General Rules and Regulations along with the Delivery Sheet) from Culture and Tourism Bureau, Miaoli County Government (http://wood.mlc.gov.tw). Alternatively, applicants might obtain it in person to the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum.
(2) Final Selection
a) Applicants will be notified of the outcome of the preliminary selection by
mail.
Qualifying candidates must submit original works for final selection.
b) Please submit the work before the deadline
c) Please seal with sturdy boxes for transportation and stick a photo of the art work on the top of the box. The host organization is not responsible for any damage caused during transportation. If the work is selected, please apply for official customs procedures and undergo transportation. Before the Final Selection of the competition, the artist should pay the freight cost and deliver the work to the museum. Please make sure the packing material for the transportation is solid and secure. If the artist doesn’t take the official procedures as regulated, the artist should be responsible for any tax or extra charge caused during the process.

Note: Delivery of Artwork
- Domestic applicants – take care of transport on their own.
- Foreign applicants –submit art works on their own, and returning art works will be assisted with the shipping by the organizer.
- Prizes and Monetary Awards: (1)Yulon Motors awards(two winners) : Monetary Award of NT$300,000 (tax inclusive)and one certificate of merit.(2) Craft Wood Carving classic awards : Monetary Award of NT$300,000 (tax inclusive) and one certificate of merit. (3)Contemporary Wood Carving Awards:Monetary Award of NT$300,000 (tax inclusive) and one certificate of merit. (4)According to taxation, 20% of the monetary award will be taxed if it is over NT$20,000.(5)Each winner will receive trophy and monetary award. The original works of Yulon Motors awards shall be reserved by Yulon Motor Co., Ltd. for the permanent collection. Craft Wood Carving classic awards and Contemporary Wood Carving Awards shall be reserved by the museum for the permanent collection.The organizer reserves the right to study, photograph, film, publish, advertise and website posting, etc., all the permanent collection items to which the artists shall have no objections. Craft Wood Carving Highly Commended, Contemporary Wood Carving Highly Commended, and All other selected work will be returned after the exhibition.(6)Overseas Yulon awards , Craft Wood Carving classic awards and Contemporary Wood Carving Awards and Highly Commended , will be offered three days free accommodation by the organizer if they wish to attend the Award Ceremony in Taiwan..
- Exhibition Date of Listed Art Works:(2) Location: Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum (No.88 Guang Sheng Xin Cheng, Guang Sheng Village, Sanyi, Miaoli, Taiwan)(4) The winners will receive five published collection books of all works and records of the exhibition; listed artists two copies each; all other applicants one copy each.
- Date: From July 18 to October 29, 2017
- Location: Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum (No.88 Guang Sheng Xin Cheng, Guang Sheng Village, Sanyi, Miaoli, Taiwan)
- The insurance budget of the organizer for all works during the exhibition covers a maximum of NT $200,000. Insurance cover over this amount is the responsibility of the artist.
- The winners will receive five published collection books of all works and records of the exhibition; listed artists two copies each; all other applicants one copy each.
- Award Ceremony:
- Date: Will be incorporated with the Sanyi Woodcarving Festival in September 2017. Exact date will be confirmed later.
