Chairman Wu of 85 Degree C Bakery Café, CEO Henry Cheng, General Manager Michael Post, members of the media, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, welcome!
As Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office here in Houston, I am pleased to be with you all to celebrate the opening of Houston’s very own 85 Degree C Bakery Café!
This establishment first came to my attention thirteen years ago. After opening the original location in Taipei, it did not take long for this café which had so captured the taste buds of Taiwan to become an international sensation, with locations opening in the United States and Australia.
When the first US location opened in California, it was met with lines stretching around the block. I have seen lines for iPhone launches, but for coffee and bread? The popularity almost defies imagination! But that is what happens when a good idea meets the Taiwan style of diligent innovation infused with relentless entrepreneurial spirit. Chairman Wu, the founder of 85 Degree C, felt he could provide 5-star quality treats at an affordable price. 13 years later, as we stand here today at the opening of the 1000th location, I think we can all agree – Chairman Wu was right.
As my office promotes economic and cultural exchanges between the peoples of Texas and Taiwan, I can say that 85 Degree C is the whole package. The successful Taiwanese business which offers the Greater Houston Community the chance to taste another culture, built around a universal food – bread. In Western culture, the term breaking bread can symbolize the beginning or strengthening of fellowship. Today, it’s a bit of both. On one hand, the momentum of Mr. Wu’s fine establishments continues forward with a new location. On the other, this will be an authentic taste of Taiwan for people in Houston to experience and enjoy. I have no doubt you will be impressed.
Thank you for the invitation to join you to celebrate this grand opening and thank you all for attending!
