Long Beach Museum of Art to Open New Exhibition Beyond The Frame: New Media Arts From Taiwan

The Long Beach Museum of Art (LBMA) will be opening its main 2016 spring exhibition on March 11, 2016 entitled Beyond the Frame: New Media Arts from Taiwan, an innovative exhibition featuring new media artists who continually evolve their creative practice with rapid advances in media technology. The exhibition includes the work of six Taiwanese artists: Daniel Lee, Shyu Ruey-Shiann, Lin Jiun-Ting, Tseng Wei-Hao, Wu Chi-Tsung, and Yao Chung-Han. These artists navigate the line between artistic tradition and modern technology conceptually as well as in form and medium. Beyond the Frame includes works created with new technologies, including video art, virtual art, interactive art, and robotics. The exhibition will run through May 29, 2016.

Organized by the Taiwan Academy, Taipei Economic & Cultural Office in Los Angeles and curated by Josiane Lih-Huei Lai the exhibition provides the community and our region with an opportunity to learn about the artists’ creative processes. Beyond the Frame encourages a conversation between the viewers and the artworks themselves as most of the artworks are interactive and respond to movement or touch. The viewer enables the artwork and becomes part of the dialogue that involves creative participation. The experimental practice of these six artists transforms our perception of art, illustrating how we interact and adapt with a continuously evolving environment.

The mixed-media artworks integrate high or low-tech objects, mechanisms, sound, light, video, and other elements to alter the meaning and functionality of the art object itself; thereby exploring the interaction and relationships among all of these varied components. Whether visibly apparent or subtly embedded, Eastern philosophy and abstract concepts within the artwork challenge the possibilities of the medium used and span the boundaries between traditional and modern, between East and West.

“The Museum has had a long history presenting cutting edge technology used by artists and Beyond The Frame continues in that tradition,” said Executive Director Ron Nelson. “We are absolutely thrilled to be working with these artists and to showcase their talents to our members and patrons of LBMA. We know everyone will be enthralled by these unique installations.”

Sponsorship of Beyond the Frame includes the Ministry of Culture, Taiwan, Taiwan Academy, Taipei Economic & Cultural Office in Los Angeles, InART Space, interTrend Communications Inc., and Imprint. For more information please visit the Museum’s website at www.lbma.org.
