Taipei, August 2 (CNA) Taiwan won three gold medals and one silver at the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) held July 23-Aug. 1 in Tbilisi, Georgia, eastern Europe, according to a statement from the Ministry of Education.
The three gold medals were awarded to Wang Kuan-wei (王冠為) of Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School, Hung Jui-chien (洪瑞謙) of Jingcheng High School, and Lu Chen-yu (盧貞宇) of Kaohsiung Municipal Senior High School. The silver went to Hsu Yen-hsin (徐衍新), also a student at the Taipei Jianguo High School.
The four students did very well in two sectors -- concept and laboratory skills -- at the IChO, said National Taiwan Normal University chemistry professor Chang I-shih (張一知), who led the Taiwanese delegation.
Hsu, who ranked 31st in individual score, missed the chance of grabbing another gold for the team, because the IChO only awards 30 gold medals.
Lu, the only girl on the team, said she was surprised to win the gold medal, as she did not prove her strength very well.
A total of 264 participants from 67 countries participated in this year's competition.
The Taiwanese team took second place in the international rankings, behind only the Chinese team, which grabbed four gold medals.
