Taiwan, U.S. to cooperate on development of 5G standards
Taipei, Sept. 29 (CNA) Telecommunications standards development associations from the United States and Taiwan signed a letter of intent Thursday in Taipei to jointly develop standards for technologies in the areas of fifth generation (5G) mobile telecom networks, Internet of Things (IoT) and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS).
The cooperation agreement was signed by the Taiwan Association of Information and Communication Standards (TAICS) and the U.S.-based Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA).
Under the agreement, the two groups will also push for Taiwan's beyond fourth generation (B4G) and 5G experimental networks to become part of TIA's IoT experimental networks and for Taiwan's industry players to join the U.S.-led Advanced Wireless Research Initiative.
With the support of the government and the industry, TAICS has signed memorandums of cooperation with the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), the Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) Alliance, and Japan's Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB) and Telecommunication Technology Committee (TTC), to promote the development of 5G-related technologies and standards.
The TAICS-TIA deal is aimed at promoting bilateral exchanges based on the foundation of cooperation between the two countries to ensure alignment with regional and international standards.
It also seeks to push for the participation of Taiwan's industry players in the U.S.' four city-sized 5G test platforms for research and testing over the next decade.
