Taipei, March 8 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) said Wednesday that she will work toward enabling women in Taiwan to choose any role they might wish to play in the society.
Speaking at a ceremony on International Women's Day to recognize 10 Outstanding Young Women in Taiwan, Tsai also promised to wipe out gender discrimination and create an environment in which women would have the support they need in the workplace.
One of the government's key goals is to broaden career choices for Taiwanese women, said Tsai, the country's first female president.
"No matter what role they choose to play in the society, they should be able to realize that choice," she said. "We will definitely work hard toward that goal."
The 10 Outstanding Young Women award is presented annually in Taiwan on March 8 in celebration of International Women's Day.
