Taipei, May 3 (CNA) A total of 19,513 cruise liner tourists visited Taiwan in the first quarter of 2017, two times that in the same period last year, according to statistics released by the Tourism Bureau on Wednesday.
Although the number of cruise tourists from mainland China plummeted by nearly 90 percent to 432 in the first quarter of the year from 4,303 in the same period last year due to the downturn in cross-strait exchanges, the number of tourists visiting Taiwan on cruises from the Philippines increased from 85 to 4,762, the statistics show.
The bureau attributed the growth to the successful promotion of cruiser tourism.
It expects the number of cruise tourists visiting Taiwan to increase from 750,000 in 2016 and break the 1 million mark for the first time this year, the bureau said.
In addition, revenue generated by cruiser tourism is expected to rise from NT$4 billion (US$133.2 million) last year to NT$5 billion this year, it added.
