NSW Treasury in collaboration with our office has hosted a webinar on Taiwan Market Update on 19th August, our office has invited Mr. Walter M. S. Yeh, President of TAITRA to take part as honorary speaker!
Other panellists include our very own DG Fiona H. C. Fan, Director Peter Mackey and Commissioner Murray Davis from NSW Treasury, Mark Hardy from Weatherzone, Mark Luo from Quantum Brilliance, CEO Ching-Mei Maddock from ATBC.
In her remarks, DG Fan explained that:
- Due to Taiwan’s success in COVID-19 prevention, Taiwan maintained an impressive economic performance.
- Taiwan Government initiated the development of six core strategic industries, including information and digital industries, cybersecurity, biotech and medical technology, defence and strategic industries, green energy and renewable energy industries, and strategic stockpile industries.
- Taiwan businesses have strong connections in South East Asian markets, cooperation between both sides would not only help NSW business to expand Taiwan’s market, but also further their reach in the South East Asia.
President Yeh iterated that
- Taiwan and Australia have close economic relations, especially in F&B and petroleum oil, both sides have recently signed Mutual Agreement on Organic Food Arrangement.
- Smart City, Green Energy and PPE are areas possible collaborations between Taiwan and NSW businesses.
- Computex, Food Taipei and Medical Taiwan are great international exhibition hosted by TAITRA, welcome Australian businesses to take part in.
Mark Hardy from Weatherzone and Mark Luo from Quantum Brilliance all shared their experience in doing business in Taiwan
- Highly industrialized, open market, quintessential in the global Tech supply chain
- Could improve on salary structure and overall “safety awareness”
- Tap into the “classmate network”
- Important to utilise local agent/ distributor/ network
Ching-mei Maddock, CEO of Australia-Taiwan Business Council (ATBC)
- ATBC is one of Australia’s oldest and most effective bi-lateral business councils, it has strong connections with Austrade, DFAT and governments from Australia and Taiwan.
- Encourage Australia Government to give priority to negotiate FTA-like agreements with Taiwan.
