On 9 March, the European Parliament adopted the “Report on foreign interference in all democratic processes in the European Union, including disinformation.”
The report acclaims that Taiwan, which stands at the forefront of the fight against information manipulation, mainly from China, has developed a successful system in dealing with malicious interference and disinformation attacks, these include:
1. Cooperation among all branches of government, also with independent NGOs specialized in fact-checking and with social media platforms, as well as promoting media literacy for all generations, forming a whole-of-society approach.
2. Encourages the EU and its Member States to deepen cooperation with Taiwan in countering foreign interference operations and disinformation campaigns from malign third countries.
The European Parliament’s Special Committee on Foreign Interference in all Democratic Processes in the European Union, including Disinformation (INGE) made its first official visit to Taiwan last November, to exchange on Taiwan’s best practices in countering disinformation and foreign electoral intervention. In its mission report, INGE concluded the visit as “a resounding success” for the quality of exchanges and intensity of the programme.
We express our sincere appreciation for the support from the European Parliament, and will continue our efforts in furthering Taiwan-EU relations and exchanges.
