The EU lifts Taiwan’s yellow card
On June 27, the EU lifted Taiwan’s yellow card, recognizing the country’s progress and reforms to tackle illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU), over the past three and half years. European Commissioner for the Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Karmenu Vella stated, “I welcome the considerable efforts undertaken by Taiwan to reform its fisheries legal framework, implement new control tools and improve the traceability of marine fisheries products. The EU's dialogue with Taiwan has shown again that international cooperation is a key driver towards healthier ocean management.” Taiwan-EU cooperation over the past years has resulted in enhancing Taiwanese authorities’ capabilities and capacities to confront IUU fishing. The EU acknowledges these capabilities are a major step forward, as Taiwan has the second largest long-distance fleet in the world.
