The European Parliament adopted a resolution to reiterate its support for EU-Taiwan BIA.

The European Parliament adopted the resolution on “the EU Trade Policy Review” on 26 November 2020, which, inter alia, calls on the Commission to start the scoping exercise and impact assessment with Taiwan as soon as possible. Following the report “implementation of the Common Commercial Policy” adopted on 7 October, this is the second resolution passed by the 9th term European Parliament that reiterates its strong support towards EU-Taiwan BIA.
This resolution represents the position of the European Parliament on the European Commission’s Trade Policy Review, which will be forwarded to the Commission. It emphasizes that while the world is facing daunting challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important for the EU to maintain “open strategic autonomy”, improve European industries’ resilience and enhance the cooperation with strategic partners such as the US.
Furthermore, during the plenary debate on 24 November, Belgium MEP Mrs Kathleen Van Brempt, on behalf of the S&D Group, also called on the Commission to start preparing the negotiations with Taiwan, expressing her firm support for an EU-Taiwan BIA.
