Agreement Signed BETWWEN The GOVERNMENT OF THE Republic OF China(TAIWAN) AND THE GOVERNMENT OF BELIZE
ON THE Cooperation in Urban Resilience and Disaster Prevention Project

April. 2nd, 2019, BELMOPAN CITY, BELIZE—

The Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) is pleased to announce that on Tuesday, April. 2nd, 2019, an Agreement Signing Ceremony with MAFFESDI will be held at the George Price Center in Belmopan City, for implementing a 3-year project on Cooperation in Urban Resilience and Disaster Prevention.

In November 2018, a pilot program named “Construction of Flood Warning Capacity in Belize” was conducted through the sponsorship of the government of Taiwan. Digital Elevation Models as well as Flood Potential Maps are then produced based on disaster records and existing geographic information. This new multi-year project following the pilot program will continue to assist the Belizean government in the use of GIS technology to establish an early warning system and improve flood preparedness and disaster response efficiency. Furthermore, this project will also bring in resources to help the building of needed infrastructure at towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena, and the integration of the early warning system into the country’s disaster prevention and rescue system, with the goal to reduce the loss of life and property caused by floods in Belize.

Additionally, since this project is an important step in building community resilience to combat climate change, Taiwan also invited and partnered with the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF) to strengthen community and ecosystem resilience and sustainability. Through bilateral and multilateral approaches and efforts, the community capacity to function properly in facing natural disasters will be immensely enhanced.
As 2019 marks the auspicious 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Taiwan and Belize, this Embassy would like to express its sincere appreciation to our Belizean friends for our joint efforts in fighting against climate change. In that regard, the signing of this agreement on urban resilience and disaster prevention is yet another concrete example demonstrating the robust relationship between our two peoples.
