The opening ceremony of the 2020 LunarFest and the lighting of Coastal Lunar Lanterns were held on January 18, 2020 at Jack Poole Plaza. TECO Director General Andy Chen was invited to attend the event. Also in attendance were BC Minister of State for Child Care, Katrina Chen, Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart, Tourism Vancouver Acting CEO Ted Lee and Indigenous Tourism BC Chair Brenda Baptiste.
Mr. Chen said that Taiwan and Canada are proud of their multicultural heritage and both are rich in indigenous cultures. Taiwan and Canada can cultivate further cultural exchanges based on these similarities. A great example is that artworks from last year’s Coastal Lunar Lanterns will be featured at the 2020 Taiwan Lantern Festival in Taichung. The six lantern installations were created by three Indigenous Canadian artists: Cory Douglas from Squamish, Thomas Cannell of the Musqueam and Zachary Skokaylem George of the Tsleil-Waututh, marking the first time that Canadian artists participate in the annual Taiwan Lantern Festival. Mr. Chen encouraged everyone to visit Taiwan to experience its culture, and hospitality in person.
