The internationally renowned choir from Taiwan “Formosa Singers,” invited by Toronto’s Formosa Evergreen Senior Citizen Centre, presented a concert “Angelic Harmony: The Voice of Formosa Singers” at the Toronto Centre for the Arts on Sep. 14. On the next day, Sep. 15, the group visited the Reverend George Leslie Mackay’s hometown Oxford County, Ontario and gave another performance at the Knox Presbyterian Church in Woodstock.
Coming from faraway Taiwan, “Formosa Singers” members showcased their beautiful songs and voices at the church of the Reverend Mackay’s birth place, singing Taiwanese folk songs and the legendary Canadian piece of music “You Raise Me Up.” The performance was wrapped with the song “The Final Hometown,” composed from Mackay’s last words after his 30 years of devotion in Taiwan. The compelling singing of “Formosa Singer” enthralled and touched Oxford residents in the audience so deeply that the performance won three consecutive standing ovation and some audiences even shed tears during the concert.
Canada enjoys a unique and long-standing relationship with Taiwan founded on the Reverend Mackay’s legacy. One and a half century ago, Mackay brought the great love for freedom and equality to Taiwan and spread the idea far and wide. “Formosa Singers” from Taiwan has kept the friendship alive today by sharing this wonderful concert. Deputy Director General Michael Chen and the staff of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Toronto have the honor to join Oxford County Warden David Mayberry to enjoy the music and to revisit the historical moment through the enchanting melodies of “Formosa Singers.”
